I very often get emails about engaged couples dreaming about their elopement day. I would say 8 of 10 couples know exactly where they want to go but they need a little guidance how to create a timeline, what hikes to do and where to stay. When Chelsea + Logan first reached me out I asked them to describe how they wanted to feel on their elopement day. They told it was important the elopement day to resemble them and we needed to make sure to include Sophie (their sweet puppy)on the portraits. A puppy included on an elopement day?!? Are you flipping kidding me?!? I said hell yeah right the way.
We broke the day in two parts to use the light in our favor. We had first look photos and portraits during the morning right after sunrise. This way Sophie could be included in the moment, also because the first hike was considered an easy hike, no cacti or things that could be potentially dangerous for the dog. We drove from the airbnb to the park and the couple had an intimate moment seeing each other on their wedding attire before sharing portraits with their sweet pup.
In the afternoon we initiated our way to the ceremony spot, yes, we saved the best for last… We hiked 6 miles (both ways) to have their ceremony at the best spot at the park – The Lighthouse. The hike is dog friendly but it was a bit too hot, so C + L thought the best was to have the moment only for the two of them. Once we arrived to the our final destination I performed their ceremony (yes, I was also their officiant) and they got to say their vows with the most stunning view of Palo Duro. They ended the day popping an apple cider and dancing their first dance at the parking lot. What a magical adventure elopement day it was.
When planning a long hike in the canyons it is very important to watch out the temperatures, there are very little shaded spots and the best time to hike it during the afternoon is during winter, early spring and late fall (for the best temperatures). It is also very important to bring enough water, I recommend a gallon per person.
